I always thought the crux-contrib was just the place to anounce important contrib port changes and stuff, and the general list was for normal CRUX chatter. crux-contrib is only mentioned in the Main/ContribRules wiki page, but not on Main/MailingLists, therefore it's safe to assume that no users subscribe to this list unless they're considering to join crux-contrib.
In general (and I think this is the right approach) users subscribing to crux@ should get all the information they need (i.e. notifications of changes that affect them), and they should only have subscribe to -contrib (or -devel) if they have a special interest in this area or want to join discussions of course.
