I've started two wiki pages to discuss the future development of CRUX itself and pkgutils, meant to serve as a outline for IRC meetings. Those pages are: http://crux.nu/Main/DevVision http://crux.nu/Main/PkgutilsIdeas
I'd appreciate if anyone with write access would add his notes to those pages.
I'd suggest to have two separate IRC meetings (pkgutils first, the "vision" second) before the end of May; dates are subject to discussion.
Comments both on the wiki pages and the rest of this mail are highly welcome.
Hi, here's a couple of first impressions, esp. on the new pkgutils, before I collect enough info / ideas to edit the wiki page: - Independently from the features we'd like to push, I'm in favour of a rewrite; I suggest either plain C with libtar or sh, with portability in mind. I'm in the middle of a ANSI C pkgutils port, (pkginfo, pkgrm almost done), my first impressions while working on the code is that using sh would significantly speed up developement and make it easier to add features in the future. - I'm a bit worried about the metadata proposal: - Not sure if leaving free, per-repository attributes can make things easier rather than produce confusion / lack of standards - Having metadata in the package means that when such fields has to be corrected (ie: typo in dependencies), the package has to be rebuilt and redistributed.
