IMHO with the rise of httpup http://clc.berlios.de/projects/httpup/ there's no need for such a repository, every contributor can have his own httpup webspace. In order to still have a central directory you could create a httpop-rep port which always contains all known /etc/ports/*.httpup files. I think most httpup repository maintainers would still allow CLC maintainers to take over their ports for inclusion in contrib, if need arises.
I agree with Paul Bonser's opinion in all points: It is always cool to have a unmaintained repository, in which you can search. My way to find a port is still "prt-get info". And IMHO it is easier to fix an outdated port than to write a new one completely from scratch. The httpup repository is a good idea, but there could arise problems with duplicates.
With such a decentralized model CRUX would be the first distribution to use P2P for its packaging :-)
