[clc-devel] [PROPOSAL] info & manpages
Hi there, I really start to miss the "info" pages. Okay, the "pager" (info(1)) isn't that great. But nowadays a lot of GNU programs have only a rudimentary/limited manpage supplied. The additional/interesting stuff was summarized in an info document. To give an example: 'grub'. The manpage is of no relevance. In fact you get more information if you just type '/sbin/grub --help' Grub's manpage explains its lack of information as follows: SEE ALSO The full documentation for grub is maintained as a Texinfo manual. If the info and grub programs are properly installed at your site, the command info grub should give you access to the complete manual. What do you guys think? Can we dare to add info pages? :-) bye, danm -- Daniel Mueller Berlin, Germany OpenPGP: 1024D/E4F4383A

As I've only been lurking on the mail list for a very long time and never actually said anything before, I know my ++/-- is irrelevant, but I have thought about this subject much in the past and wanted to just state my agreement. I think that in the grand scheme of things, trimming out info pages is more of a detriment than anything. The disk space saved is insignificant (let's face it, if a couple of megabytes makes or breaks the deal for someone, they probably aren't running crux anyways) and it's benificial to have the documentation available when dealing with issues, especially issues which may find you without internet access until the issue is resolved. It's the same reason I think that the manual should remain on the disc. The space saved is not worth the hassle saved by keeping it. My two cents. Justin "hermit" Rebelo

What about adding only the most important missing stuff converting info pages with info2man[1]? Obviuosly if there are too many port/pages that becomes more irritating than just saying yes to info pages. The fact that info(1) sucks isn't a reason to not include info pages. pinfo(1) makes reading them a pleasure :P Vote: 0. I kinda fear the implications of this, after all, it's a distinct feature of CRUX we're removing. In addition, now that "Per's taste" isn't there as a benchmark for simplicity anymore, I'm reluctant to add to many small features here and there; it is very hard to to decide whether a feature is sensible, or bloat. I'd therefore propose to defer the decision on this and other proposals which remove distinct features of Per's CRUX until we have defined common goals and directions for the future of this project; presumably, this will be after CRUXCon 2006.
