[clc-devel] 2.2-test1 test ISO @ http://crux.nu/~jw/2.2/
Hey, As you certainly realized we have a little delay, but as our direct competitors [1,2]. However, here's a test ISO for 2.2-test1, with a working setup. The post-setup stuff I added is non-functional, i.e. it will just print "Usage: /usr/bin/post-setup <root>" in the very end. You can run "/usr/bin/post-setup /mnt" (or whatever rootfs you've chosen to see what it would do; it's still just echos, no real actions are performed on your live system. I'll upload a functional ISO later today, or tomorrow at the latest. I've so far tested: - install in qemu - update 2.2 -> 2.2 I'm about to test: - update 2.1 -> 2.2, doing manually what post-setup tells me it would do. This ISO has 2.6.16 which seems to cause data corruptions on some laptops, so please _don't_ use this on a productive system. Other than that, any kind of testing is appreciated; if possible, I'd like to announce this beginning next week (i.e. 2.2-test1), and see how the testing goes; april 1st is probably a bit early to release, but as I said earlier we can announce it then anyway, in a bundle with duke nukem forever (quote from #crux) :-). Effect: 1. slows down suspend 2. stresses drives during suspend/resume cycle So it's not a huge thing (if it's likely to be fixed soon), and shouldn't stop preliminary testing. There's a patch which is supposed to fix it, but since it's not been queued for addition yet and test1's focus is not to test a kernel, I'm rebuilding with 2.6.15.6 now. I'd also suggest to ship 2.2 final with the same kernel as test1 had, to keep the changes as little as possible, at the (small) price of being slightly outdated at the kernel front. Opinions? Kind regards, Johannes P.S. I sucessfully updated a stock 2.1 install to 2.2 (with minor changes needed to my script which will be incorporated into the next build) -- Johannes Winkelmann mailto:jw@tks6.net Zurich, Switzerland http://jw.tks6.net

Yep, seocnd that. Updateing the kernel is not a issue, we should ship the iso with a "stable" one.

Cool, thanks for your efforts on that :-) Greetings Juergen -- Juergen Daubert | mailto:jue@jue.li Korb, Germany | http://jue.li/crux

It's using 2.6.15.6, and has an activated setup-helper which removes devfsd, adds udev and dependencies, and renames pkgconfig to pkg-config. There's also a plain 2.1 qemu hd image available at http://crux.nu/~jw/2.2/crux-2.1.hda.bz2 (with swiss german keyboard layout :-)). I've verified that an update works with the new ISO, so you can boot from 2.2, run setup/update, install the new kernel, and after a reboot you'll have a nice udev enabled 2.2. Therefore, I'm asking everybody interested in it to test it; I propose this to become test1 unless we find any major problems. Thanks for testing, Johannes -- Johannes Winkelmann mailto:jw@tks6.net Zurich, Switzerland http://jw.tks6.net

As an addendum, I couldn't get madwifi to build (expected some special KERNEL_DIR to be set; don't have the exact error ready right now), nor iptables (footprint missmatch). If Matt or Simone managed to build them, I'd be happy to hear from you. Regards, Johannes -- Johannes Winkelmann mailto:jw@tks6.net Zurich, Switzerland http://jw.tks6.net

Okay, I promise the mail flood won't go on like this, however wanted to let you know that I updated my 2.1/udev laptop to 2.2 using test1-test2. I found one more problem: since firefox depends no on cairo and glitz (which I hadn't installed before), it won't run before those packages are added too. Possible solutions: 1. add another hook to setup-helper (formerly known as post-setup) 2. add this to the release notes, add it to the FAQ, answer it a million times on IRC and the mailing list I tend to think that whatever setup breaks "automatically" during 'update' should be fixed by setup-helper, especially since there's no way in setup to add additional packages. However I learned on IRC that some users don't seem to fully agree with this extension, and maybe some of you feel the same. Anyway, I've added support for it in svn; if you guys think we should roll 2.2 without setup-helper, we can always remove it during the test1 phase.
