[clc-devel] Mailing list usage guideline
Hi, There seems to be an increasing number of users who are new to mailing lists and make the typical errors like top posting [1], including a full copy of the original message without relating to the content [2], or including e-mail addresses in the attribution line(s) [1] which then appear unobfuscated in web archives. In order to make the mailing list more pleasant, I've started a 'usage guideline' section on http://crux.nu/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/wiki/MailingLists Feel free to question and of those "rules", but let's write it down to make sure it's visible. I also think we should consider writing a similar document for IRC. Kind regards, Johannes References: 1 http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=crux&m=113350973921921&w=2 2 http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=crux&m=113327551604693&w=2

...i know i'm breaking a rule here... but something we should keep in mind about the top posting, gmail doesnt let you not do it. It's designed that way unless you erase the whole email. just and fyi. -j On 12/2/05, Jonathan Asghar <jjasghar@gmail.com> wrote:

...i know i'm breaking a rule here... Actually, you broke three: your message also contained my e-mail address in the attribution line, and you didn't cut the quoted message down to what you where answering to.
I also added a note to avoid HTML/multipart messages, and to not CC the original sender since they're on the list anyway.
but something we should keep in mind about the top posting, gmail doesnt let you not do it. It's designed that way unless you erase the whole email. Actually, that's not that bad; if the gmail user follows the rule to only quote the relevant parts, you want to go through the message anyway; starting on top is the easiest way for most human beings.

I'm going to make a concious effort now to make sure i only post directly to the list. I've always hit "reply all" and never looked back.

I think i just converted to plain text right now, but i'm not 100% sure...

Cptn, are you picking on poor Stewy? :) Seriously, I think it's a good idea to start the usage guidelines pages, but only so we can point to them ourselves when yet-another-ignorant-new-user makes the same mistakes. I doubt very much these pages would prevent initial abuse from newbies. After all, if they'd taken the time to comb our documentation, they'd probably answer their question in the first place. Cptn, are you picking on poor Stewy? :) Well... he's a good example. I didn't want to pick on him in particular, even though I pointed it out to him previously in private mail, which he seems to have ignored.
Seriously, I think it's a good idea to start the usage guidelines pages, but only so we can point to them ourselves when yet-another-ignorant-new-user makes the same mistakes. I doubt very much these pages would prevent initial abuse from newbies. Sure. I don't see this page as a "list of sins" or anything. Rather I'd hope that we can friendly point new users to this page, where they find a good overview of what we like to see.
We might consider adding it in a mailing list footer, so readers of the list get a change to click the link and learn about the etiquette. Regards, Johannes -- Johannes Winkelmann mailto:jw@tks6.net Bern, Switzerland http://jw.tks6.net
