When I exit Xorg (starting with exec openbox-session or just exec xterm in xinitrc) I end up with a blank screen instead of the console and both keyboard and mouse don't work. The contents of Xorg.0.log would be of interest. You might also want to read up on Magic SysRq instead of doing a forced poweroff: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key
