I made the symlink after a fresh install as it will be a while before all the contrib ports follow the new way. No problems so far and I've built quite a few ports.

If you do choose to use a symlink copy all the man pages from the old location to the new first. After symlink run /etc/cron/daily/mandb or man -k and apropos may not be accurate.
