If you mean you are using xf86-video-nouveau, I suggest you switch to the proprietary nVidia driver (package opt/nvidia). It offers much better support for your graphics chip and way more performance than the open source one. Switch to the console, as root do: # ports -u # prt-get remove xf86-video-nouveau # prt-get depinst nvidia and reboot afterwards, then you can try to start XFCE. If Xorg doesn't start, do this: # cd # Xorg -configure # mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf{,.old} # mv xorg.conf /etc/X11/ then try starting XFCE again (use startxfce4). If it works, run nVidia settings application which you can find in the Applications menu. From there you can set a lot of options concerning your graphics chip.
