Don't know if this is your case but is /mnt the ISO file? It would be read-only. Run mount /mnt and ensure kernel is building on a R/W filesystem.

Good suggestion. I was using the Crux docker image on a MacOSX and mount shows: osxfs on /mnt type fuse.osxfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other,max_read=1048576) I guess that's the problem.
