KDE and UTF-8

Hi all, I sometimes have to edit UTF-8 documents with characters with some rather exotic diacritical marks. Now when I view a UTF-8 encoded web page with those characters for instance in Firefox, all the characters are there. However, the same page in Konqueror shows rectangles for a lot of them, and Kate just displays blanks. Is KDE using all of X's fonts? Does someone know where I can tell KDE what to display?
