Hello, Per and Robert
Is it possible to upgrade to 2.3 without booting from CD-rom och NFS?
Sure.
I need the same over here...
I was thinking of changing the /etc/ports/* to point to 2.3 instead and recompile gcc, glibc, install them and recompile the kernel and reboot (and hope for the best).
On my embedded powerpc platform this was working pretty well... I recompiled as much as possible (there are a few issues on powerpc...) and installed it without major problems. glibc-2.5 is, however, not in good shape for my platform (ppc, mpc8540, e500) :-( I will try it with eglibc-2.5 or eglibc-latest.
(I think) I did something similar when I migrated from 2.1 to 2.2 and it worked fine. But do you who know how it works under the hood have any good advice?
I did this. First of all: check out the changelog. Some programs have been removed from the basic install, and replaced by others. Expat has changed major version, so a lot of programs needing libexpat.so.0 will not find this file. I'd recommend copying libexpat.so.0 to some other folder and temporarily add this to /etc/ld.so.conf. Then upgrade expat before any program depending on it.
Also, have a look at the Apache Portable Runtime (apr and aprutils) and the dependencies (i.e. subversion).
