They don't block alternative clients but an old version of the protocol. Alternative clients that emulate the current version are fine.
That was my first thought when I saw this thread's subject, but 2.4.3 seems to work with ICQ for me.
Thanks for the updated port, Markus. Hopefully we'll have 2.4.3 in opt soon.
Why is there no pidgin 2.4.1 and 2.4.2 even in opt now it's even more out of date i'll keep my own copy i can't rely on opt anymore for updatedness. http://romster.dyndns.org:8080/linux/ports/crux/romster-opt/pidgin/Pkgfile
