Common issues are missing drivers to access your disk:
common: DEVTMPFS=y DEVTMPFS_MOUNT=y BLK_DEV_SD=y
filesystem: EXT4_FS=y
disk controller, on vmware probably: ATA_PIIX=y on physical hardware: SATA_AHCI=y
