Hi all, Sorry for the "retro" problem. I'm using Crux 2.1 (still) and I am seeing that I will have to upgrade in the future so I have decided to see how udev (might) works. I used Matt Housch's " udev from the start" from the wiki page as a guide. After boot everything appears OK.. I do get a boot message "loading sysfs ..already loaded or busy" ?? unsure how important that is... but the current handbook says sysfs needs to be in the fstab... It seems to me that apparently the snd/sound devices aren't being loaded/populated at all. I have an old kernel with devfs to compare with, so it's definitely the udev! Under devfs kernel the directories are populated quite differently as the relatively bare /dev/snd /dev/sound directories are with the udev kernel. So what am I missing? How can I trouble-shoot this...?? Oh.. my sound card isn't being recognized in either kernel boot dmesg.... but I load it as a module in modprobe.conf. Has been ok until now... Any input/help would be greatly appreciated.....
Hi Chuck, A little more info might help. What kernels work/don't work? What is the sound card? What version of udev? My best advice though would be to do a fresh install of 2.3, use the new kernel and udev and then try getting things going. Regards, Joe
Joe, Thanks for replying! Installing fresh is always a good idea... but having to rebuild all my packages etc with this old box is something I'm trying to avoid. My box is an old Compaq Laptop Armada with a vintage Pentuim MMX (166mhz) processor The build-in sound card is apparently (likely) an Ensoniq 1688. My two kernel images are respectively 2.6.12.5 with devfs enabled, and 2.6.17. I have installed new (last week) udev and it's dependencies and edited rc and rc.single as outlined by Matt Housch in his "CRUX 2.1 with udev from the start". It seems to me "hotplug support" is otherwise integrated in later kernels, as is devfs gone after 2.6.12. So if I undo the changes in rc/rcsingle I get sound (as previously) under devfs. Soundcard I've never been able to get the card recognized while booting. I have enabled Alsa and the module (only available under ISA) 1688. I typically load these at boot with modprobe.conf. I haven't done anything with udev.conf or anything with rules.d etc.... I was sort of hoping I had overlooked something simple.... Any help?? At 06:20 AM 4/7/2007, you wrote:
