It just doesn't work this way (usually). We're packaging and maintaining these ports in our own spare time, and if a port's maintainer loses interest in that package than it's totally acceptable that CRUX doesn't have an "official" port for the package anymore. You could hope that someone listens to your cries and puts the ports in contrib though. Or just maintain them yourself (see above)! Hello A little bit "stupidly". Which was the concept? "The primary focus of this distribution is keep it simple", which is "simple"? 1. Sources every Day not a.v. -> http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.crux.devel -> no solution ... 2. Sourcen disappear -> many things deleted (opt) -> without annoncement -> solution -> create self a repro ... -> no time, for more :-(( -> http://crux.nu/portdb/?a=repo&q=bashy OK, which is now with point one, missing a solution. http://crux.nu/Main/PkgutilsIdeas Thanks and Regards Ronny

1. Sources every Day not a.v. -> http://news.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.crux.devel -> no solution
http://crux.nu/files/check_urls.html lists seven packages, that were not available this morning. Three of these are brand new and are likely working again really soon (rubyforge.org). The other one DOES WORK JUST FINE, but isn't reachable from _crux.nu_. That leaves three (omg omg omg). Gotta admit though that these three have been open for a little too long. And once again I'd like to say that you're the ONLY ONE who constantly nags about this non-issue, everyone else apparently either copes with the current situation or doesn't dare to speak up. I suspect it's the former.
2. Sourcen disappear -> many things deleted (opt) -> without annoncement -> solution -> create self a repro ... -> no time, for more :-(( -> http://crux.nu/portdb/?a=repo&q=bashy
It's nine ports. You can just dump them to your repo for now. There's no problem.

No, it's not a joke. We briefly discussed the problem and for the moment we decided not to setup a mirroring system. For us it's a lot simpler to check the availability of sources from time to time (hence check-urls) instead of having to deal with distfiles. If people can take the time to provide patches for broken urls, as soon as they detect it. I think the annoyances would be greatly reduced. Anyway, we will discuss the question a bit more after the 2.3 release. Thank you for your input, Regards, Simone -- Simone Rota Bergamo, Italy - http://www.varlock.com

If you can compile Software, why are you using something like prt-get? I don't think thats only a question what you can do and what not. I think a own mirror will be a good and hands-on thing. About the ports, i agree with ronny. Its not very cool, simple kick them out. If the Maintainer has no time, is there no other? Or why don't ask somebody if he will maintain this Ports. All ports in there own repository isn't a good solution. Hannes

Hands on refers to fixing problems YOURSELF, not relying on others in this context. If you think otherwise, then CRUX is very likely not the right distribution for you. This issue makes my blood boil every time it is posted on these mailing lists. Hands on ALSO refers to being proactive in discovering bugs and reporting them to the bug database on crux.nu. I should shut up and stop doing your work because you obviously have not read much...

Again, crux is not about holding your hand. Having yet another redundant set of mirrors would little good because you need even further resources in keeping that up to date. As a matter of fact, the whole mirror idea to me sounds like babying. I use crux because it does not babysit, that's a job for the big 4 linux distributions.

I fully understand that ports sometimes must be deleted from the official repos due to the lack of maintenance, and I don't really have a problem with that, except that I find the "surprise" effect slightly annoying. Sometimes you don't notice that a port is gone for some time, and then when you need it you must dig in backups/git repositories/what have you in order to find a copy. How about posting a warning notice to this list, something along the lines of "In two weeks time the following ports will be removed from the official repos"? That would give people ample time to backup/repackage/whatever before the port disappears. Who knows, there might even pop up the occasional new maintainer... ;-) -- Hälsningar/Best regards, Tom ________________________________________________________________________ Tom Rindborg Phone: +46-8-599 984 40 Stockholm, Sweden MailTo:Tom.Rindborg@fatburen.org "If you have to hate, hate gently."

Once upon a time wasn't there an "unmaintained" repository. Perhaps such a repository should be used again, but put a time limit on how long they stay in the repository for. This would prevent the "nasty suprise" effect and the time limit would prevent such a repository from becoming too big (possibly the reason for it's removal). -- Lucas Hazel <lucas@die.net.au> ================================================= "Clothes make the man.
