So maybe the nub of the issue is why can Debian autoconfigure the mouse but "X -configure" on Crix 2.2 returns an error message about not being able to configure the mouse (I posted the exact language of the error message earlier in this thread)?
Because the Debian kernel was configured by people who know how to do that in order to get most things working for most people. This is unlike CRUX where the user is expected to know what he needs or wants. If you want things working but aren't very good at making them work yourself, you should really reconsider your distro choice.
Hi Mark, I don't know whether you ended up fixing this but I had the same problem with a machine today and it triggered me to just ask the obvious again. In the kernel config -> Input device support, you should have Mouse interface, and Event interface selected, also in the mouse section you should have PS/2. If it's a USB mouse then you'll also need HID support in the USB section. If you like I'll send you my config file (from either 2.6.16.14 or 2.6.16.19). A recompile of the kernel then fixed this problem. I'd had these features turned off because I wasn't using X on this machine but now I am and when the mouse didn't work a quick check of /dev/input/ showed that there was no mouse device for X to use. Regards, Joe

My mouse is working fine, but perhaps Tom will make use of your advice :)
