I think it is a very good idea to incluse precompiled kernel option, just like in sourcemage. You said " who would choose the options" Well, I don't why it'd be that hard since almost every distro does it! Also, most of the people that are installing CRUX are only trying the distro, they only want to test if they like it. They could install faster with precompiled, and if they liked it, reinstall with compile kernel. Bye Envoyé de mon iPod Le 10-05-28 à 03:00, crux-request@lists.crux.nu a écrit :

I have idea have make CRUX better for novice users. my idea is make a "setup-kernel" text dialog when user can choose 1) COMPILE CUSTOM KERNEL 2) INSTALL KERNEL 3) INSTALL SERVER KERNEL
i dont know that is posible to add 2 binary packages of precompiled kernels..
why do that..? fastest install process and when i install crux on more computers than i only choose a 2) desktop or 3) server kernel there can be a 1) compile custom from sources allways too..
I think it is a very good idea to incluse precompiled kernel option, just like in sourcemage. well, it was/is always included, just see the /boot directory on the cdrom [...] Also, most of the people that are installing CRUX are only trying the distro, they only want to test if they like it. They could install faster with precompiled, and if they liked it, reinstall with compile kernel. IMHO, the only thing related to our precompiled kernel is that we assumed to use the initrd/squashfs image as the rootfs, and also all common filesystem like vfat, ext2, ext3, ext4, xfs, jfs, nfs, reiserfs, etc. are compiled as modules and need to be loaded from the initrd/squashfs image, so you can't use this precompiled kernel to boot
Hi Justin, On 05/28/10 15:22, Justin wrote: directly a device with those filesystem's format unless you load first the init script from initrd/squashfs, then modprobe manually the filesystem(s) module(s) you need and finally mount-and-pivot_root to your device. Configuring a kernel with these common filesystems (not as modules) will solve it, but anyways I can't see where's the problem with kernel compilations for a linux advanced user ;D Best regards, -- Jose V Beneyto | http://sepen.mine.nu/

I don't think you're getting the point. This is not what CRUX is about. It's the KISS principle, not the KIEasyS principle. And in my experience, people are NOT just downloading it to try it then move on to the next distro. The documentation (as I recall) is very clear about reading the whole handbook before installing. If you got to the point of compiling a kernel and were too uncomfortable, then I don't think this distro is for you. _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea.
