Kernel 2.6.17.3 does not properly load the IDE disks that are attached to an onboard raid-controller Promise PDC200378 (aka Fastrak 378 or Fastrak S150 TX4) which resides on an MSI 865PE-NEO FISR2 motherboard as a "south bridge" for a maximum of two IDE disks and two SATA disks. I configured the BIOS for two IDE disks and RAID1, but the same thing happens when I configure this as SATA. These errors seen in the dmesg file as error messages (attached): ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi0 : sata_nv ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi1 : sata_nv The motherboard BIOS and Promise BIOS think everything is just fine. Perhaps I am lacking the correct drivers but the ones on http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=4&go=GO# aren't much help. There are also some old versions for redhat, suse, and mandrake, which aren't exactly what I need: http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=3&go=GO http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=1&go=GO So my questions are: a) is this a driver problem or did I miss something in .config (attached). b) if so, are there any other available drivers that can be used on Crux 2.2? c) if not, can I adapt the ones above? d) or else, should I go for some other piece of hardware (e.g. an ITE8212f)? First of all, sata_nv is probably your onboard SATA controller. (nforce motherboard?). The RAID on the promise will not work, it is not a real hardware RAID. It will not work under linux. If you want RAID, use software raid with mdadm. Even with the RAID not working, you can still address the drive seperately on the promise controller. If you are searching for a simple SATA controller without RAID, I had great experiences with Silicon Image controllers. They just work and do exactly what you expect. For SATA controllers with REAL RAID, LSI and some Adaptec controllers, altough I have had weird problems with the latter. Glenn Theo Kanter wrote:
Kernel 2.6.17.3 does not properly load the IDE disks that are attached to an onboard raid-controller Promise PDC200378 (aka Fastrak 378 or Fastrak S150 TX4) which resides on an MSI 865PE-NEO FISR2 motherboard as a "south bridge" for a maximum of two IDE disks and two SATA disks. I configured the BIOS for two IDE disks and RAID1, but the same thing happens when I configure this as SATA. These errors seen in the dmesg file as error messages (attached):
ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi0 : sata_nv ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi1 : sata_nv
The motherboard BIOS and Promise BIOS think everything is just fine. Perhaps I am lacking the correct drivers but the ones on http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=4&go=GO#
aren't much help. There are also some old versions for redhat, suse, and mandrake, which aren't exactly what I need:
http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=3&go=GO
http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=1&go=GO
So my questions are: a) is this a driver problem or did I miss something in .config (attached). b) if so, are there any other available drivers that can be used on Crux 2.2? c) if not, can I adapt the ones above? d) or else, should I go for some other piece of hardware (e.g. an ITE8212f)?
Thanks in advance, --theo

I guess you mean PDC20378? That controller is supported by the latest 2.6.17.x+ Kernels.
S150 TX4) which resides on an MSI 865PE-NEO FISR2 motherboard as a "south bridge" for a maximum of two IDE disks and two SATA disks.
what does lspci [-v[v]] say?
I configured the BIOS for two IDE disks and RAID1, but the same thing happens when I configure this as SATA.
Notice that there might be a difference if you let the Controller's BIOS do the RAID or the Linux driver's.
These errors seen in the dmesg file as error messages (attached):
ata1: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi0 : sata_nv ata2: SATA link down (SStatus 0) scsi1 : sata_nv
That's from the sata_nv driver, which is not the Promise one. It says that there is no signal on the SATA physical connection (no harddrive) on that controller's port. Check, where you really connected your harddisks. :-)
The motherboard BIOS and Promise BIOS think everything is just fine. Perhaps I am lacking the correct drivers but the ones on http://www.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?productId=108&category=driver&os=4&go=GO#
You don't need that to get it started. The driver is part of the SCSI subsystem and is called sata_promise.c As of linux-2.6.17.11 it supports the Promise 2037x, 20319, 20619, 20771, 2057x, 40518 chips. The config is called SCSI_SATA_PROMISE
aren't much help. There are also some old versions for redhat, suse, and mandrake, which aren't exactly what I need:
Forget those. Check if you are fine with the right kernel drivers. There are/were rumors that the raid functionality might be faster with the native promise drivers. So if really needed, you can later give the promise one a try. But first make sure the one-in-kernel-tree works.
So my questions are: a) is this a driver problem or did I miss something in .config (attached).
I guess so. You enabled almost all and everything... maybe you only want to enable the stuff you really have.
b) if so, are there any other available drivers that can be used on Crux 2.2?
You can use whatever driver you want, if you have the source code.
c) if not, can I adapt the ones above?
It should just work.
d) or else, should I go for some other piece of hardware (e.g. an ITE8212f)?
As long as your current one isn't broken it shouldn't be necessary. Best greets, Clemens Koller _______________________________ R&D Imaging Devices Anagramm GmbH Rupert-Mayer-Str. 45/1 81379 Muenchen Germany http://www.anagramm.de Phone: +49-89-741518-50 Fax: +49-89-741518-19

Attached. lspci -v reports a: 03:09.0 RAID bus controller: Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20378 (FastTrak 378/SATA 378) (rev 02) Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. Notice that there might be a difference if you let the Controller's BIOS do the RAID or the Linux driver's. Agreed. That's from the sata_nv driver, which is not the Promise one. It says that there is no signal on the SATA physical connection (no harddrive) on that controller's port. Of course you are right. I should have seen that. Check, where you really connected your harddisks. :-) Good one. Both disks (ST3160023A IDE disks) are connected via an 80-lead IDE flat cable as master/slave to IDE3 on the motherboard The PDC20378 controls IDE3 as well as the two SATA connectors next to it according to all the info from MSI. The driver is part of the SCSI subsystem and is called sata_promise.c As of linux-2.6.17.11 it supports the Promise 2037x, 20319, 20619, 20771, 2057x, 40518 chips.
The config is called SCSI_SATA_PROMISE Yes, I enabled this in .config with SCSI_SATA_PROMISE=y but no luck yet. I will try different settings in the BIOS of both the motherboard and the PDC20378. Check if you are fine with the right kernel drivers. There are/were rumors that the raid functionality might be faster with the native promise drivers. So if really needed, you can later give the promise one a try. But first make sure the one-in-kernel-tree works. Agreed. I guess so. You enabled almost all and everything... maybe you only want to enable the stuff you really have. Considering the fact that I enabled sata_promise I am puzzled by the fact that it does not show up. Good idea. Will do. Perhaps I should disable sata_nv to begin with...

Hello!
I guess you mean PDC20378? That controller is supported by the latest 2.6.17.x+ Kernels.
Just for the records: linux-2.6.18 does not support the PATA of the PDC20775 (Promise SATA II 300 TX2plus) yet. This Controller is a 1xPATA and 2xSATA combo PCI card. The SATA works right out of the box, but for PATA you need to apply the following patch: http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/trunk/2.6.18/4110_promise-pdc2037x.pat... Thanks Clemens!, this explains my lack of success with the PDC20378. Jeff Garzik (who apparently heads work on libata) assured me that PATA support for sata_promise is not in 2.6.18. The page above confirms that there is just *no* PATA support for the PDC2037X in 2.6.18. So my remaining question is, being unfamiliar with kernel hacking should I just apply a sort of rejmerge approach?: a) open linux-2.6.18/drivers/scsi/libata-core.c in emacs b) substitute the patch (indicated as lines preceded by +++) for lines to be removed (indicated as preceded by ---) c) recompile the kernel, redo grub, and d) reboot? --theo

I am speaking of the PDC20775 here (2x SATA, 1x PATA).

Jep, similar...
a) open linux-2.6.18/drivers/scsi/libata-core.c in emacs b) substitute the patch (indicated as lines preceded by +++) for lines to be removed (indicated as preceded by ---) c) recompile the kernel, redo grub, and d) reboot?
You can do that, but it' even more simple: just use the patch program. Just $ wget http://dev.gentoo.org/~dsd/genpatches/trunk/2.6.18/4110_promise-pdc2037x.pat... into your kernel tree. (../linux-2.6.18), then $ patch -p1 < 4110_promise-pdc2037x.patch will do the editing job for you. You should get something "applied" successfully, if not, read a Kernel-Patch-HowTo. Then build your kernel as normal. Just yesterday, I had a PDC20775's PATA enabled that way. The reason that the PATA is not yet supported in the kernel is that some libata code may conflict with the old IDE code if the user misconfigures the IDE subsystem. But the above patch was submitted upstream, AFAIK.
