Hi, I've been using CRUX for about 2 days (still getting my kernel panic, but I will resolve it soon) and I would like to get more people using CRUX, more people thinking as I am (I think the same as CRUX phylosophy). Now, I've got an idea. You probably know http://distrowatch.com... They have a distribution popularity rank (HDP or Hit Per Day). As I am talking, Ubuntu is 2357, Mint : 1622, Fedora : 1579, etc (in the last 6 months) . Unfortunatly, CRUX is ranking at 144 this month (less than 40 views!) . It's sad because it has almost no visibility, and people that could eventually try it probably think they isn't a lot of people (community). Thus, I have a suggestion. Change the home page of your web browser to http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=crux . This way, CRUX should go up =) This is only a suggestion, tell what you think! That's a noble target but you should have a look at http://crux.nu/Main/About which says: (...) Unlike other distributions, the primary goal of CRUX is not to be the most popular (read: biggest number of users) or to put as many features as possible into the system. The idea is rather to build a streamlined distribution, targetted at a specific audience which in turn gets a system without compromises. (...) regards, Thomas -- Bad user karma.

I've been using CRUX for many years now for several servers and other devices on x86 and PPC. I really like the hands-on philosophy, but once you are getting busy with other tasks than maintaining your systems, one thing is really a pain: the manual upgrade process each CRUX release. (Imagine maintaining about 10..20 different machines in different locations.) So, my biggest wish for CRUX: go for Rolling Releases. That would it make it easier to use/maintain CRUX in production environments. Just my five cents. Regards, Clemens

Yes, that's a valid point.

I'm just not sure how to do it. How to sanely handle handle ports renames, port removals, ABI breaks etc? :| Regards, Tilman -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Well, maybe it's worth looking over the fence how Arch does it? The user just sees the binary packages, but what's going on behind the scenes? (I'm quite new to Arch. I just check it out because they do Rolling Releases.) CRUX should be possible to build these core binaries on the system in a way to avoid ABI breaks. Maybe it needs rebuilding many dependend ports, but well... that doesn't matter. I can spend days of compile time for each machine but in some cases there is just no way to put in some installation media or access to a console to upgrade the system. Mounting the .iso and unsquashfs the packages from the installation media works, but it's IMO more a hack than KISS. (See: http://crux.nu/Wiki/UpgradeWithMinimumDowntime) Greets, Clemens
