I'm looking at upgrading to a new workstation. Most likely an AMD 64 bit CPU. I know there is a 64 bit version of crux (I use it on a server) but it's a little out dated now and has been discontinued. Is anyone using crux on a 64 bit machine in 64 bit mode and if so are there any tricks to getting it set up? I love my crux and I REALLY don't want to have to look for another distro. HIA, Joe
The standard i686 Crux ISO or the i586 ISO should work fine on a 64-bit machine. You won't be taking advantage of the additional capabilities, but it will work. I can't really speculate on the benefits to be gained from actually using software compiled on an amd64 toolchain, but I have been told that certain apps, like databases, benefit more than others. -Ryan Joe Gilmour wrote:

Till now we had a few poorly loaded amd64-capable machines (mail, web-ftp, NAT, DVB), but now we are looking for a dedicated db server. Seems there would be some real benefit using native 64-bit x86 binaries in this case. So, looking at discontinued crux64 is kinda sad... I would like to test some early attempts to create official crux amd64/em64t port if there would be any... -- Mikhail Kolesnik ICQ: 260259143 IRC: mike_k at freenode/#crux, rusnet/#yalta Jabber: mike_k@jabber.lafox.net NIC handle: MKK83-UANIC

Same thing over here. We want to do native 64bit software development on an 64bit Athlon X2 with just the necessary 32bit stuff on it. I've had a look at a Gentoo based Distro called RR64 (Sabayon) at http://www.lxnaydesign.net/ (I do some beta testing there, too) It's nice for a fancy desktop system with lots of bells'n'whistles, but for a server there is just too much stuff someone won't need. I think it's pretty important to get 64bit versions out, soon. Can somebody tell what's missing to put out the latest CRUX in 64bit? I can offer to spend some hours for low-level stuff (kernel/toolchain). Hi, Just on the 64-bit topic, I'm looking at buying a replacment box for one of my servers, unfortuantely most suppliers around here don't suplly 32bit anymore (or if they do, they don't have the motherboard to go with them). Q: Will an existing 32bit CRUX 2.2 work without any dramas ? Q: Would anyone recommend recompiling everything ? Is there any benifit ? cheers James -- -- -"Problems are Solved by Method" - - James Mills <prologic@shortcircuit.net.au> - HomePage: http://shortcircuit.net.au/~prologic/ - Phone: +61732166379 - Mobile: +61404270962 - Skype: therealprologic - MSN: prologic@shortcircuit.net.au - ICQ: 98888663 - IRC: irc://shortcircuit.net.au#se Please avoid sending me Word or PowerPoint attachments. Yes.

No - you're better off waiting a bit till everybody uses 64-bit CPU's :)
The only solid benefit is more registers. -- ~predatorfreak GnuPG Public key: http://pred.dcaf-security.org/dcafsec-pub-gpgkey.asc
