Replacement for abcde
Hi, What would you suggest as a replacement for abcde (something to transfer music from CD to flac files). Ideally with a Crux port. I use cdparanoia + flac for that - it's a two-step process and it's quite crude, but it works. (Not sure, how "integrated" abcde is: Does it autmagically fetch the track names from some database?)

He could use s-cdda to access the audio tracks, it is very small -rw-r--r-- 1 ports ports 17885 Jan 28 21:29 /x/balls/s-cdda/s-cdda-0.8.5.tar.gz Is portable to Linux and *BSD. Only uses SCSI MMC-3 commands to drive the disc, which may be a little slower. (That is the standard CD-ROM interface.) Regarding the rest, i use s-cdda-to-db as it is named now, it is pretty specific and roots in a >20 year old codebase. Last year i have rewritten it to use MusicBrainz to fetch info, but i really hate that; luckily i just recently learned that the GNU people saved a copy of the CDDB database before it has been shut down, on my TODO list is bringing back support for CDDB as well. But if the CD has CD-TEXT then it can use that as well, s-cdda dumps such things in a shell-friendly way. I added flac (upon your IRC request?) and opus support to s-cdda-to-db by then, too, flac i even have installed and thus tested quite a bit, opus only according to manual (i am all in favour of plain ogg vorbis that i use personally rather exclusively for about twenty years). It is pretty specific in how it stores the data: per-CD directory, plain text music.db file in there with information, songs are only numbered (the info is in music.db and also in the files itself, of course), but as it is plain text and in-file creating symlink farms whatever way is liked is very easy. It is console-based, guides you as things happen, and the music database format is doc/commented in the template file as it springs up in $VISUAL (/$EDITOR). --steffen | |Der Kragenbaer, The moon bear, |der holt sich munter he cheerfully and one by one |einen nach dem anderen runter wa.ks himself off |(By Robert Gernhardt)

Thanks for advice. I might try it in the future. For now, I decided to resurrect the abcde port and added it to my port collection. https://wawrzek.name/crux/repo/ Wawrzek -- Dr Wawrzyniec NiewodniczaĆski or Wawrzek for short PhD in Quantum Chemistry & MSc in Molecular Engineering WWW: http://wawrzek.name E-MAIL: jobs@wawrzek.name Linux User #177124
