i am using CRUX 2.3 i686 on my AMD64. it has been 3 days i am searching Google with ALSA how to and ALSA setup, Linuxquestions.org, Linuxforums.org, Gentoo ALSA guide, TLDP alsa how to and CRUX archives at gmane and the best i have come up with are these: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.crux.general/740/match=al... http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.crux.general/735/match=al... http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.crux.general/2590/match=a... still, that does not solve my problem. here is what i have done PROBLEM: sound applications HANG when i start to play any audio. (e.g "ogg123" HANG with "ALSA write error") i did 5 *fresh* installations of CRUX, to experiment with ALSA and all of the times i used EXACTLY same kernel options i used for Gentoo and i never had any problem with them. ALSA was built into the kernel. "alsa-lib", "alsa-utils" and "alsa-oss" were installed. then i used alsamixer to unmute and raise the sounds. INSTALL # 1.) "ogg123"plays songs, no troubles. i recompiled the kernel but it does not help. did not try mpg321 this time. 2.) "Ogg123" HNAGS while starting to play a song. even mpg321 hangs :-( 3.) ogg123 and mpg321 hang when i try to play anything. 4.) both ogg123 and mpg321 play fine, no problems 5.) this time, i did not install alsa-lib/utils/oss packages. i want some help on what should i do ? also, in all of these cases i did not see any "alsa" in "/etc/rc.d" -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/

Sounds like a bug. Check whether your card is supported: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/ Check the bug tracker for your bug: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/ Reinstalling the whole system because of a bug like this is a bad idea. The chance that it will actually help is a tiny something above zero. Regards, Tilman -- A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text. Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing? A: Top-posting. Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

it is. in Gentoo, i used it to listen to Deep Purple's "soldier of fortune" ;-) i also watched movies when i used Arch Linux. sh-3.2$ /usr/sbin/lspci -v | grep audio 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. *quite* a new thing for me, a bit strange too. i will try to find whether the BUG is posted or not by using some keywords but since it is my first time i will ask you for help on whethr i should report my bug or not (before reporting to ALSA project)

a BIG thanks for telling this. i will not do this again. it seems i am still thinking in terms of Windows :-( -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/

i thought it will be useful, take a look at this: sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237 VIA 8237 with AD1888 at 0xb400, irq 5 sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14rc1 (Tue Jan 09 09:56:17 2007 UTC). sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.14rc1 emulation code) Kernel: Linux crux 2.6.20.3 #2 PREEMPT Mon Apr 30 17:15:00 UTC 2007 i686 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: VIA 8237 with AD1888 at 0xb400, irq 5 Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Timers: 7: system timer Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG sh-3.2$ -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/

Hi arnuld, do you have a valid .asoundrc file? Example: pcm.via82xx { type hw card 0 } ctl.via82xx { type hw card 0 } regards Hannes

Hi arnuld, do you have a valid .asoundrc file?
NO. i only have "asound.state" and as i said NO "/etc/rc.d/alsa" file unlike i have for cups and xdm.
Example: pcm.via82xx { type hw card 0 }
ctl.via82xx { type hw card 0 }
i have created this file in my home directory and i am in the "audio" user group. i have created the same file for "root" but same problem :-( no change inproblem. BTW, i forgot to mention and noticed 3 things when i run "ogg123" or mpg321 (if that matters) and they happen with/without ".asoundrc": 1.) it plays the sound (1st "1 sec part") continuously and repeatedly forever. 2.) ogg123 in my case, HANGS in there. even C-c and C-d do not work BUT i can open another Xterm (if i am in X) or go to another TTY and can use "kill -9 PID" command to kill it. 3.) this is the error i always get: "ALSA write error: Input/Output Error error2" it seems like there is no BUG filed yet for this problem. closest i came is this: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=1622 should i file a BUG now ? -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/
