Will this be a public machine for CLC people where we might be able to test our ports? Or is public access unavailable? One problem I always had was that I don't update right away since my boxes are usually in use and it takes a while for me to take them down. A publicly available box would be good to test things. I know due to security risks and people being bad, such things are rarely available, so if you can allow access, cool, if not, no biggie.. This might be a good reason to research more ideas for allowing building of ports without being root. Would allow a central box for people to test ports and not require sudo or root to do so. Unfortunately, as Per said, it's difficult to find a generic solution. Personally, I think our ports are the best thing we have and also somewhat bad... We're missing features, such as post/pre scripts and built-in dependencies. I know that prt-get now does most of these things and if so, why not just integrate the tools? Make prt-get be the default build tool instead of having all these different tools? Wouldn't it be easier? Just a thought. I'd prefer to keep the machine private for the moment. Honestly I think that exposing a public CRUX machine to the net 24/7 would be a high security risk, given my poor security knowledge. The idea of a public test machine is very interesting (I think Sourceforge provides something similar, with some more popular distro as a build environment to test projects). > This might be a good reason to research more ideas for allowing building > of ports without being root. This could solve the problem only partially. User account could be enough to compromise the machine (as in Debian servers recently rooted exploiting a kernel vuln). > Personally, I think our ports are the best thing we have and also > somewhat bad... I sometimes feel there's something missing with the current way we manage ports, but keep in mind most users love CRUX *because* it lacks such features. That said I'd be personally happy with a stricter standardization of ports (deps, url, whatever), but I feel most CRUX users do prefer the current, simpler way. I hope it is a bit more secure than the other machines from gentoo or debian. I don't want to tell more details on a public mailing list. Only so much: it is a very minimalistic install and it is firewalled by a professional product (one of the best IMO). Yes, http://ftp.fukt.bth.se/pub/os/linux/crux/latest/ChangeLog lists additions to the 1.3 ISO kernel. Not sure which drivers you refer to with "those extra scsi/raid storage devices". > Perhaps why not have two kernels, one the general one, and one that has > EVERYTHING and lilo can have a menu for users to select which one they > want to use. I'm not sure I see the advantage of having two kernels? As I've said before I don't mind adding more drivers to the current kernel, just send me (tested) patches. Problem is, people never send me any patches. /Per From tilman at code-monkey.de Mon Dec 8 17:52:48 2003 From: tilman at code-monkey.de (Tilman Sauerbeck) Date: Mon, 8 Dec 2003 18:52:48 +0100 Subject: [clc-devel] CLC Build results In-Reply-To: <1428.69.37.11.196.1070722844.squirrel@webmail.discordians.net> References: <1070480140.16381.21.camel@sip.linux> <1070651244.741.24.camel@sip.linux> <1428.69.37.11.196.1070722844.squirrel@webmail.discordians.net> Message-ID: <20031208175248.GA1087@code-monkey.de> Logan Ingalls [2003-12-06 15:28]: > Since Simone does not have time to do another build, does someone with > 1.3-test1 think they could try to install my packages again? I suggest to use the existing mozilla2 port (maybe rename it to mozilla?). I know it uses gtk2 instead of gtk1, but it could be a good temp solution (until firebird reaches 1.0 and mozilla is replaced by it, if I understand well). Just an idea. > And what will we do with the mozilla-flash-plugin? One port with files for > firebird and mozilla or one port for mozilla and one port for firebird? I have the same "problem" here with the acrobat reader plugin. I'd prefer to have separate ports, in order to avoid installation of unnecessary files. Btw, is it more CRUX-ish to have the acroread port install the plugins (if moz and/or firebird are found) or creating a separate firebird-acroread-plugin port? IIRC the basic idea was to keep unmaintained untouched and only change contrib... I know this didn't work (I have myself updated unmaintained ports at times to make the build again), but I'm not a fan of accepting changes against unmaintained before we have guidelines for submitting them (what to include, format etc). I guess it's time to remember Markus' mail [1] and consider dropping unmaintained completely. We have three kind of ports right now: 1. contrib 2. unmaintained (but updated) 3. unmaintained and forgotten I see basically two approaches: a) we allow external contributors to send back their changes (which will require a well defined procedure) b) we move port in 2. into our personal httpup repos and invite everyone to participate ports using httpup as well, covering all ports which are currently in unmaintained and updated at times. Like this, we only loose those ports which aren't in use. We should then probably consider a better way to list httpup repos, maybe even searchable; maybe a little repo browser tool in Ruby? To me, this is just a discussion about the idea behind CLC; to me, it is to provide good ports, therefore I'm all in favor of Plan B :-) Comments appreciated Best regards, Johannes References: 1 http://lists.berlios.de/pipermail/clc-devel/2003-October/000141.html -- Johannes Winkelmann mailto:jw at tks6.net Biel, Switzerland http://jw.tks6.net From emil at unf.se Tue Dec 16 13:44:00 2003 From: emil at unf.se (=?Windows-1252?Q?Emil_=D6sterlund?=) Date: Tue, 16 Dec 2003 14:44:00 +0100 Subject: [clc-devel] new realplay Message-ID: This one works fine. i put the rpm on my site. is that ok? regarding to copyright and stuff. /E -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
