Hi everybody, there's a bunch of new tickets (87..92) with no contact information, no httpup repo for unmaintained, wrong type, etc. Btw, what to do with contrib summissions / request for updates? The submission rules explain that it's better to contact the maintainer directly. Shall we make this rule more strict? Apart from that, I think a redefinition of ticket types would make the submission process a bit more clear: - Defect/update in contrib port (if we want this) - Defect/update in unmaintained port - Documentation Just an idea, Regards, Simone -- Simone Rota WEB : http://www.varlock.com Bergamo, Italy MAIL: sip at varlock.com From riemer at ppprs1.phy.tu-dresden.de Wed Jun 16 13:35:17 2004 From: riemer at ppprs1.phy.tu-dresden.de (Tilo Riemer) Date: Wed, 16 Jun 2004 15:35:17 +0200 Subject: [clc-devel] [port update] gqview In-Reply-To: <40D04B28.6080803@varlock.com> References: <20040612222139.10714.qmail@rfhpc8082.fh-regensburg.de> <20040613074300.GA1457@hoc> <40D04B28.6080803@varlock.com> Message-ID: <20040616133517.GB1582@ppprs1.phy.tu-dresden.de> Hello, On Wed, Jun 16, 2004 at 03:29:12PM +0200, Simone Rota wrote: > there's a bunch of new tickets (87..92) with no contact information, > no httpup repo for unmaintained, wrong type, etc. sorry, I have very less time but I will update my ports asap (hope this week). Sorry I didn't bring that up in IRC, but why do you switch away from httpup? I mean 'cvs update' transmits complete files as well (of course clients can request compression, but still), so it's similar in terms of netwerk load. I don't mean to advertise httpup, just interested in the reason your switching. Another thing I was wondering about is whether it makes sense to make PPC users use the tree from CLC which is only tested on x86. Wouldn't it be better to have your own repository, and sync it with the CLC tree if this is wanted, including PPC specific changes and fixes? > cptn on freenode has told to me that you're using cvs on ssh, it's not a > problem, we can work on the "driver" to works throught ssh. AFAICS if Martin allows anonymous access to the CVS, it won't be through ssh (since the anonymous user would require a user account on this machine then). Well, both http space and network load are on the CLC server, right? We have httpup repositories anyway, so there's no additional load on your side. Even more, the CVS traffic will be on our side as well, so it basically boils down that we either offer ports to users using the httpup service we already have, or an additional, less secure [1] way (anonymous cvs) we had to implement anew. There's no visible difference to the user (besides the CVS directories in the ports tree when using the CVS service). Or am I missing something fundamental here? Basically, we try to select maintainer which have a certain experience with CRUX and CLC. Unfortunately, I haven't talked to you on IRC, and the posts in the CRUX mailing list make me feel that you just recently started to use CRUX. I might be wrong though. I'll just give you a few hints on your ports (and I'm sorry if they are kind of hard): > This is the list: > 1) I repackaged the unmaintained 'wmCalClock' to take account of the > CFLAGS parameter with the last version of wmCalClock. mkdir -p $PKG/usr/X11R6/{bin,man} BASE=`echo $PKG/../..` cd $BASE patch -p0 < wmCalClock.patch cd $SRC/$name-$version/Src make CFLAGS="$CFLAGS" make DESTDIR=$PKG/usr/X11R6 install this BASE construct looks strange (maybe it was this way in the original port already), is it really required? I'd rather create a clean patch (without work/src in the path). - Port names must be all lowercase. See http://www.fukt.bth.se/~per/crux/doc/handbook.html#Package-Guidelines-General - The 'usr/X11R6/man/man1' entry in the .footprint looks fishy > 2) I repackaged the unmaintained 'LIBEVENT'. It's really a mistake to > lose this excellent library. I also used the last release. - The depends line is wrong; there's no port called 'kernel', and no port called '2.6.*' See http://crux.fh-regensburg.de/cgi-bin/cvstrac/wiki?p=PackageGuidelines - The description is _far_ too long; it should just tell what this package does, no details and such. - The README should contain information about the port, not the packaged software. > 3) 'ERLANG' language: an open source, powerful langugae used in high > availabilty/folt tolerant systems (+ emacs-mode) - Again, you're using this obscure BASE variable. The Pkgfile seems very long, but maybe that's the easiest way. - The description spans over multiple lines and again is too verbose - The dependency line is bad (wrong names OpenSSL, this "(optional)" notes, versions). Again check the package guidelines from CLC. > 4) 'REBOL' language: I packaged both 'rebol/core' and 'rebol/view' > with their emacs-mode - Again the BASE variable... - README contains again irrelevant information (history of REBOL ?) > 5) 'WMI': a new lightweight, customizable window manager for power user - The README is far too verbose - The description line spans over multiple lines - The depends line is wrong (contains version numbers) > 6) 'RE2C': an improved lexical parser generator, 2 or 3 times faster > than lex/flex. - The README is too verbose; things like whether you used this in one of your projects is irrelevant to users (sorry). Same for "I very much welcome anyone who would like to contribute to the project"... - The description in the Pkgfile spans over multiple lines. > For the ports 1 and 2, I want to become the new maintainer? For the > rest, I'm your man. By looking at your ports, it seems that you are a talented and interested packager. I'd really suggest you put them into a private repository and try to adjust yourself more to the guidelines and rules we use here at CLC, and resubmit an application once you are a bit more familiar with the general concepts of our ports. Try looking at existing ports to see how we use dependencies, descriptions and README's. Consistency within our ports tree is one of main goals, which requires a certain degree of familiarity with the ports which already exists. Hmm, since we're using a CVS repository it shouldn't be a problem to mix both architectures, x86 & ppc. CVS offers so called 'branches' for such circumstances. A picture says more than thousands of words: ------------snip-------------- Variant one: ============ CRUX PPC uses its own branch without taking care of CLC's main branch. (cvs -b ) myport/Pkgfile: [CVS version tree] +---------+ +---------+ +---------+ Branch 1.2.2 -> _! 1.2.2.1 !----! 1.2.2.2 !----! 1.2.2.3 ! (PPC-2_0 ppc) / +---------+ +---------+ +---------+ / / +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ ! 1.1 !----! 1.2 !----! 1.3 !----! 1.4 !----! 1.5 ! <- The main trunk +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ (CONTRIB-2_0 x86) Variant two: ============ CRUX PPC always gets the latest (main) version of a particular port and modifies it for their ppc edition. The branch tag would be moved from version to version (cvs -b -B -F ). myport/Pkgfile: [CVS version tree] +---------+ +---------+ Branch 1.2.2 -> _! 1.2.2.1 !-X Branch 1.5.2 -> _! 1.5.2.1 ! (PPC-2_0 ppc) / +---------+ (PPC-2_0 ppc) / +---------+ / / / / +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ ! 1.1 !----! 1.2 !----! 1.3 !----! 1.4 !----! 1.5 ! <- The main trunk +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ +-----+ (CONTRIB-2_0 x86) ------------snap-------------- Okay - it's not really the right way[1] to use branches, but it would work for us - Are there any CVS cracks who can jostle me in the right direction ? [1] https://www.cvshome.org/docs/manual/cvs-1.11.16/cvs_5.html#SEC54 As long as the main branch remains untouched by PPC stuff, I'd be happy to see some CRUX PPC guys at CLC. bye, danm -- Daniel Mueller Berlin, Germany (OpenPGP: 1024D/126EC290) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
