From mark at borkware.net Sun Oct 1 07:06:39 2006 From: mark at borkware.net (Mark Rosenstand) Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2006 09:06:39 +0200 Subject: [crux-devel] Upgrades Message-ID: <1159686399.3518.0.camel@mjollnir.borkware.net> Hi, I've done a couple of upgrades to major packages locally (and rebuilt everything) to see if something might be relevant for 2.3, namely: coreutils 6.3: chgrp & friends seem to break in a fakeroot environment, causing any usage of them in ports to have no effect. This is likely a fakeroot issue, but IMO big enough to hold back the upgrade until a fix/workaround is available. db 4.5.20: caused python to fail compiling its bsddb module because some functions that have been marked as deprecated for a long time are actually gone now - I added a couple of #ifdef's to fix this, seems to work fine. glibc 2.5: I've tested it with both our current kernel headers (whatever their origin is is only known to danm, I guess...) and the 2.6.18 headers from kernel.org. strace seems to not build any longer (with both header sets), but that's pretty much it! gnutls 1.4.4 (as well as all other gcrypt projects): nothing except seahorse (gnome gpg front-end) doesn't crash as much anymore, probably because we're about the only distro shipping 1.0.x (well, together with debian stable :P) python 2.5: everything compiles, all small apps work, but some of the big ones (e.g. quodlibet, a media player that uses the gstreamer and gnome python bindings - 'nuff said) don't. I think we're better off waiting a month or two for wider adoption. util-linux 2.13-pre7: older versions abuse the kernel headers, which the kernel.org-provided ones don't allow - so this upgrade is needed. Also, they switched to autoconf, so the config patching isn't needed any longer. However the build breaks with --disable-nls - haven't looked into fixing that yet. I'd suggest to add Han's suggestion to pkgmk to detect downloads with mimetype HTML as failed (unless they're *.html); I'll have a look later today or early next week. With berlios starting to suffer from the same problem, I think it's worth addressing this. Not sure what your error was, but I can reproduce a build failure here as well (use of undefined symbols PT_CR_IPSR and PT_CR_IIP); strace uses symbols which are only defined in asm-ia64/ptrace_offsets.h (as of 2.6.18). Who is working on fixes? Some applications make assumptions about the kernel headers which aren't met anymore. Once wider adaption of the new glibc and kernel header starts the fixes will make it to the appropriate places. Shall we plan a > CRUXCON 2007? > - Resolve the "sort-of-maintained ports" problem for > core and opt. > - Define a (not too strict) release process - pkgutils C rewrite Seriously, I've made some proof of concept and I'd like to share it with you. It's attached. It's not an appeal for accepting, just an infantile offer. :-) But I'd be glad to see if it would be useful. ----- NOTE: It may be buggy as yet and can delete all information from your computer. Don't use it if you have anything to lose. You are warned. :-) At least, make the /var/lib/pkg/db backup ----- It's not completely pkgutils as yet, but the most harder part of it: pkgadd. pkgrm and pkginfo are pending. It's complete rewrite from scratch, besides of license header. Per's copyright stayed intact, because he is the author of pkgutils idea. It is using libarchive library now. And because of completely different conflicts-finding algorithms it is handle symlinks in the very right way. For example, if filesystem have /usr/var as a symlink to /var (it have), then the new package with /usr/var/ directory and /usr/var/foo/bar files in it will be written to the database as: usr/var usr/var/foo/ usr/var/foo/bar (original pkgutils would write first line as "usr/var/", note the slash) That means, that pkgutils understood that it should "convert" package's usr/var/ directory to the filesystem's usr/var symlink. Also, it uses a bit different pkgadd.conf file parser (not sscanf), and because of that regexp field now can contain spaces (don't know how useful it is, but it's good thing to have anyway, imo). And because of that, when you need \ character in the regexp, you must place it (the regexp) in quotes and escape it in C-manner. Like, UPGRADE "^var/spool/\\w*cron/.*$" NO Though, regexp without spaces and \ characters still can be written without quotes: UPGRADE ^etc/mail/cf/.*$ YES Because of these incompatibles, /usr/etc/pkgadd.conf used for now. pkgadd "frontend" to the libpkgadd uses getopt_long() to handle command line arguments and thus can process multiple packages specified on the command line, for example: # pkgadd /mnt/cdrom/crux/core/*.pkg.tar.gz Plus, pkgadd don't care about if package installed already or not, it will upgrade package if it's installed and install it if not. That was nontrivial to do in original pkgutils because of internal difficulties. Though, that feature can be disabled by inserting if(pkg_installed && !u_option) exit(1); clause. Hope you'll find time to discuss it either on IRC meeting or in mailing list. > Regards, > Simone Good luck, -- Anton (irc: bd2) -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Along those lines, and I know we discussed this at CRUXCon 2k4, but perhaps this file could be manipulated by commands like the lock file? e.g. prt-get alias jre jdk; prt-get listaliased, etc.. This would remove the burden of bumping a prt-get release when new alias situations arise, and would allow users to create their own aliases for situations the rest of us may not be aware of or need to be aware of. Just an idea. Also, just a general question, has anyone modified pkgmk to exit with a unique status when failing because of NEW .footprint entries, and if so, does prt-get have the ability to test for this? Rebuilding a large software base like a full gnome deployment with all of the goodies becomes very tedious and time consuming without these options. Otherwise, we'd end up listing a rather large number of ports in every other port; i.e. every port would depend on the toolchain, many ports would depend on sed/grep/etc., autotools etc. This would also lead to circles in the dependency graph and therefore break our dependency model. Okay. > Also see > https://crux.nu/bugs/?do=details&id=17 Thanks. I did some more search on bin86 dependencies. There seems only lilo and dis86 depending on bin86, so bin86 is not needed if you don't want to use lilo (or dis86). Only lilo needs bin86, and only during build-time. Message-ID: <1161415248.496.12.camel@mjollnir.borkware.net> Hi, Mostly by accident, I discovered that "we" are switching SCM once again, this time to git. As much as I do like git, and especially the effort our maintainer has put into maintaining it, do I think Havoc Pennington has a point in his recent blog post[1]. Anyway, I hope the crux-commits list will be retained. Is this the case? A really nice thing about git is the pull speed - perhaps git:// could now replace rsync in order to allow local modifications and preserve them between synchronizations. svn.driver allowed this, but was dog slow and I/O intensive. Also, it'd be nice if decisions like these were brought up on the mailing lists, at least after they've been made. A couple of warnings: - Please do not commit to the svn repo from now on, it's a lot easier for me to hit a non-moving target :-) - I spotted problems with the strategy I intended to use for the svn->git migration. These prevent us to fully migrate the 2.1 and 2.2 ports as two branches in the same git repo. I'm working on an alternative approach to the problem, in the worst case we'll have to limit the history of the git repo to 2.2, while keeping a separate repository for older ports. Regards, Simone -- Simone Rota Bergamo, Italy - http://www.varlock.com From sip at varlock.com Sun Oct 22 00:54:49 2006 From: sip at varlock.com (Simone Rota) Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 02:54:49 +0200 Subject: [crux-devel] git migration concluded Message-ID: <453AC159.9040102@varlock.com> Hi, after a long struggle I managed to import the core and opt repositories into git while keeping the history and both branches (2.1,2.2) in the same repo. The only _working_ method I discovered to achieve that involves having a common ancestor for 2.1 and 2.2, so contrarily to our initial considerations I had to keep a master branch. Status: - The git repos are in place and available for developers - Our rsync/httpup repositories are now synced with the git repos. - The new contrib repo is exported in the same way as core and opt; since it's quite empty at the moment, we're still serving the old one which is not synced anymore. - Our subversion repository has been disabled. A svnadmin dump has been made for emergencies. To do: - Enable the update hook for sending mail to crux-commits and add some code to handle security notifications. - Fix the timeline. (sip) - Bug tracker: replace references to svnweb, add substitution for gitweb. - There are certainly many small adjustements I can't recall right now. The sooner we detect anomalies the better, so please start hacking on the git repos and report back problems to the one to blame :-) Regards, Simone -- Simone Rota Bergamo, Italy - http://www.varlock.com From crux at crux.nu Sun Oct 22 08:27:17 2006 From: crux at crux.nu (crux at crux.nu) Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 10:27:17 +0200 Subject: [crux-devel] Potentially broken source downloads Message-ID: <453b2b65.Gry6/7uFfa3nK4Y+%crux@crux.nu> Port: /home/crux/svn-to-rsync-working-copy/crux-2.2/opt/mod_perl Url: http://perl.apache.org/dist/mod_perl-2.0.2.tar.gz Reason: curl: (7) couldn't connect to host State: New Full report: http://crux.nu/files/check_urls.html From crux at crux.nu Sun Oct 22 08:31:23 2006 From: crux at crux.nu (crux at crux.nu) Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2006 10:31:23 +0200 Subject: [crux-devel] prtverify daily results Message-ID: <453b2c5b.KOtHtQySyVhxS8pJ%crux@crux.nu> Differences since last check: (no differences) Full report: http://crux.nu/files/prtverify.log From sip at varlock.com Sun Oct 22 23:04:10 2006 From: sip at varlock.com (Simone Rota) Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2006 01:04:10 +0200 Subject: [crux-devel] conversion of the 'system' repo Message-ID: <453BF8EA.2030304@varlock.com> Hi, you may have noticed I have not yet imported in git the 'system' files, essentially because some adjustement to the layout was planned but we never discussed the details. Since the svn repo is now offline*, I attach a file listing the items I'm talking about. Particularly towards the system team: does anybody has a proposal for a new layout or shall I import the tree as it appears in the svn repo? Also, what name and subdir to pick for the import?
