first time I saw the existance of the /usr/etc directory on a Crux installation, I thought somebody forgot to use the --sysconfdir parameter in a port, but I was mistaken. In the Crux handbook (section 4.5.2) it says: /etc/ Configuration files for system software (daemons, etc) /usr/etc// Configuration files So it is intentional, yet it has always bothered me. Placing configuration files under /usr, where installed program files go, is just not natural. What was the logic behind this? What was the logic behind this? The logic behind is rather simple and sensible: configuration files for system software (e.g. udev, cron, exim) into /etc whereas other (user) software like mutt, gimp or irssi into /usr/etc. The later are normally never touched by the user, they contain the program defaults and are overwritten/extended by files in the user home dir. Well, then in the handbook it should say: /usr/etc/ Configuration files for program defaults that can be overwritten/extended by files in the user home dir Right now I can see some configuration files in /usr/etc that can't be overwritten by files in the user's home dir: dbus, esd.conf, minirc.dfl (minicom), sane.d I can see a problem here when somebody configures this files by hand and they get overwritten by the next update (by default pkgadd -u overwrites everything outside /etc). Anyway, I still don't see where we benefit by splitting the configuration files that can and that can't be extended by files in the user's home dir. It clearly confuses some maintainers. BTW, the aspell joke has some reality in it: [alan at zeus ~]$ strace -f -eopen aspell -c /etc/passwd open("/etc/ld.so.cache", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libaspell.so.15", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libncurses.so.5", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libdl.so.2", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libm.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/usr/lib/libgcc_s.so.1", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/lib/libc.so.6", O_RDONLY) = 3 open("/home/alan/.aspell.conf", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) open("/usr/etc/aspell.conf", O_RDONLY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) ... In this case, aspell looks for ~/.aspell.conf, then it falls back to /usr/etc/aspell.conf. Yet, the administrator might want to have some custom global configuration. In this case, the admin will have to write files in /usr. -- Alan -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... It's same as /usr/bin. What is the benefit of splitting /bin /usr/bin /usr/local/bin? / /bin - minimum binary files needed for: boot, mounting /usr and trivial repair. Core of the system. /etc - minimum configuration files needed for the binaries in the /bin /usr /usr/bin - stuff that could be on another partition/harddrive/network filesystem (despite that / can be on the nfs either) /usr/etc - configuration files needed for the stuff in the /usr/bin That separation is great, and used not only in the CRUX distribution. Some BSD systems using it as well. -- Anton Vorontsov email: cbou at mail.ru backup email: ya-cbou at yandex.ru irc://irc.freenode.net/bd2 From jue at jue.li Thu Nov 15 08:09:41 2007 From: jue at jue.li (Juergen Daubert) Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2007 09:09:41 +0100 Subject: [crux-devel] /usr/etc In-Reply-To: <200711140851.13306.alan+crux@mizrahi.com.ve> References: <200711132053.34499.alan+crux@mizrahi.com.ve> <20071114081245.GA8492@jue.netz> <200711140851.13306.alan+crux@mizrahi.com.ve> Message-ID: <20071115080941.GA8828@jue.netz> On Wed, Nov 14, 2007 at 08:51:08AM -0400, Alan Mizrahi wrote: > > > The first time I saw the existance of the /usr/etc directory on a Crux > > > installation, I thought somebody forgot to use the --sysconfdir parameter > > > in a port, but I was mistaken. > > Oops, sorry about the orthographic error, I think aspell is looking > in /usr/etc instead of /etc ;) > > > > In the Crux handbook (section 4.5.2) it says: > > > /etc/ Configuration files for system software (daemons, etc) > > > /usr/etc// Configuration files > > > > > > So it is intentional, yet it has always bothered me. > > > > > > Placing configuration files under /usr, where installed program files go, > > > is just not natural. I've had time to update some machines here. Things are looking fine, basically. But when it comes to X dependencies, there are some hickup, which I am wondering how this is supposed to be fixed. The upgrade from 2.3 to 2.4 seems to remove an installed libXp.so.6 which breaks opt/emacs when it was installed before (configured --with-x): $ emacs emacs: error while loading shared libraries: libXp.so.6: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory ...which in turn breaks the update of gettext because it want's to use emacs for any reason. ...rebuilding emacs fails because there are tons of undefined references in libXaw.so due to some other missing X stuff... ...rebuilding xorg-libxaw fails because libgcrypt.so.11 is missing... I am fine with rebuilding stuff manually, but did I miss something obvious during the upgrade? Hmm, that's strange. I've found lately that libxslt was by mistake linked against libgcrypt, a fixed package is available at [2]. But IMO libxaw dosn't depend on libxslt. So, updating a 2.3 release will kill the dependent ports if it was used there. Well... not nice, but it's a minor problem as long as it's fixable. Okay, I guess I need to ask the guys at apache.org for that. Is it correct that a change in the library API is only allowed on a major version change? (i.e. libdb-4.x to libdb-5.x) Hmm... even more questions: is it wise to remove old libs at all, when applications are still linked against them? Is that a task, CRUX (the mainainers of the distro) should care about, or is it just user's responsibility to care about it's non ports/core apps? I guess I've seen a nice way to discover all broken binaries? (ldd over all binaries, grepping for 'not found' ... or better ideas?) Hmm... didn't find anything in the FAQs. Is there anything we should > add/enable? > - ... ? I would like to propose some changes/updates to the Handbook: The first thing: For the impatient, I would prefer to have Till's CRUX-quickinstall in the handbook close to the beginning - or as a separate file on the ISO. Reason: To give new users an overview and some motivation that the installation is really just a matter of minutes. And for the experienced a reminder not to miss a line. Second: it would be good to extend the Handbook for a more detailed reference. I.e. include some of the FAQs - especially the ones which belong to the installation: http://crux.nu/Main/Faq#ntoc10 Reason: centralized documentation... preferably in the Handbook. Third: Section 3.3 - Upgrading from CDROM: Add some more details what happens here: Packages from core get _replaced_, so dependencies of already installed and not updated (non-core/opt/xorg) packages might get broken... Add an example how this looks like and add an example of a revdep session top fix it and some explanations. (like http://crux.nu/Main/BinaryIncompatibleUpdates, but more details) What do you think? From time to time problems occur with dynamic dependencies. Packages which installed on build-server, but not on the target, are linked to other binaries. pkg-get failed with these dependencies because they are not registered in Pkgfile. dep_diff: compares prt-get deptree (Pkgfile:Depends on) with finddeps (prt-utils) for one or all installed packages. This script generates a list of dynamic-not-listed dependencies (dependencies to core-ports are silently ignored). May be this script is also a help for other user. In our case nearly 100 Packages are affected ! Good to know the problem. But how to solve it ? I see 3 ways out: 1. modify Pkgfile:Depends on 2. modify Pkgfile:configure --no_that --no_these 3. use different chroot-environments for different type of server The 3th way is possible the most time-consuming one. But the other two have also disadvantages. Can't use default ports anymore. :-( Any hints ? -- Falk Hamann, IT T +49-7191-9669-242, Falk.Hamann at dbaudio.com, www.dbaudio.com d&b audiotechnik AG, Eugen-Adolff-Str. 134, 71522 Backnang, Germany Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats: Hilmar Schill; Vorstand: Frank Bothe, Markus Strohmeier Finanzen: Kay Lange, Marketing: Simon Johnston, Vertrieb: Peter Tongue Sitz: Backnang; Amtsgericht - Registergericht - Stuttgart, HRB 270952 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Attached is a patch for pkgutils 5.30.0 that adds distfile repository support via a pkgmk.conf variable, PKGMK_DISTFILE_REPOS. By default it's defined empty which causes no behavioral changes. If you define it to a list of URLs, like PKGMK_DISTFILE_REPOS=(http://gentoo.osuosl.org/distfiles/ http://fileserver.intranet/crux/distfiles/), it'll attempt to fetch the source archive from the listed hosts before falling back to the host defined in the source=() array in the Pkgfile. Yes, this has been brought up before and by other people besides me. The reason I bring it up again now is that I'd like to see it in 2.4. The opinions in the IRC meeting were favorable but I'm posting it here for more exposure. Please give it a look and feel free to comment. In its current form it simply uses wget. Can wget fetch from local folders or nfs shares? As for pushing, no. It's a lot simpler than that. Util-linux is unmaintained since years. Thanks for your sugesstion. I moved this thread to crux-devel for further discussion. The last update of util-linux was in march 06, so it's only 1.5 years. Anyway, I'd second the move to util-linux-ng. Please test the attached port. If there are no objections we should do the change with the 2.4-rc1 next week. regards Juergen -- Juergen Daubert | mailto:jue at jue.li Korb, Germany | http://jue.li/crux -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
