Meanwhile I found the reason here:

In short: Due to a change in the default behaviour of the DSO linking, must be listed explicitly.
This can be done by changing the Makefile after the configuration:

	# ...
	sed -i '/^CORE_LIBS/aCORE_LIBS += -lfontconfig' src/Makefile

(I guess the same issue will pop up in other ports as well).
