Can we build a simple, cross-distribution installation framework?
Hi Cruxers, I'm the guy currently maintaining the Arch installation tools, I looked at your installation guide and noticed some similar goals, so this may be of interest to you: http://dieter.plaetinck.be/can_we_build_a_simple_cross-distribution_installa... Dieter

What is defined as "simple" ? I don't think it gets much simpler (IHMO) than what we have with the CRUX distribution where you install mostly by hand. We have a "setup" script that really (all it does) is allow the user to select a bunch of packages they want to install off the cd. I don't really think an "installation framework" or a more feature-rich "installer" is within the scope of CRUX or it's goals. (I could be wrong). cheers James -- -- James Mills -- -- "Problems are solved by method"

Everyone has his own set of compromises, and I don't want this to turn into a semantic discussion about what the word "simple" means. Just thought I should mention it, if you guys would be interested, it could turn out beneficial to both of us. If you don't care, that's just fine for me too ;) Dieter

It's not that we don't care, it's that CRUX is very simple and has very little architecture put into it. It is one of it's strengths and the very reason a lot of us use it. I use it for everything :) cheers James -- -- James Mills -- -- "Problems are solved by method"

I had a read through your slides and the concept is very interesting. It could be really useful. I still feel though that CRUX's installation is easy and simple enough and normally only takes me 5-10mins to install (minus kernel configure/compile time). cheers James -- -- James Mills -- -- "Problems are solved by method"
Build it and they will come. If you're serious about it, then do it. If it's good, it will get used. On 13 February 2011 08:16, James Mills <prologic@shortcircuit.net.au> wrote:

I agree with this. If you were writing such a framework in Python perhaps I might be more inclined to offer up some of my time :) cheers James -- -- James Mills -- -- "Problems are solved by method"
