PROBLEM: sound applications HANG when i start to play any audio. (e.g "ogg123" HANG with "ALSA write error")
Sounds like a bug.
Check whether your card is supported: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
it is. in Gentoo, i used it to listen to Deep Purple's "soldier of fortune" ;-) i also watched movies when i used Arch Linux. sh-3.2$ /usr/sbin/lspci -v | grep audio 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60) sh-3.2$ it is here: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=vendor-VIA#matrix
Check the bug tracker for your bug: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/
*quite* a new thing for me, a bit strange too. i will try to find whether the BUG is posted or not by using some keywords but since it is my first time i will ask you for help on whethr i should report my bug or not (before reporting to ALSA project)
Reinstalling the whole system because of a bug like this is a bad idea. The chance that it will actually help is a tiny something above zero.
a BIG thanks for telling this. i will not do this again. it seems i am still thinking in terms of Windows :-( -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/
