PROBLEM: sound applications HANG when i start to play any audio. (e.g "ogg123" HANG with "ALSA write error")
Sounds like a bug.
Check whether your card is supported: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/
it is. in Gentoo, i used it to listen to Deep Purple's "soldier of fortune" ;-) i also watched movies when i used Arch Linux.
sh-3.2$ /usr/sbin/lspci -v | grep audio 00:11.5 Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60) sh-3.2$
it is here: http://alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=vendor-VIA#matrix
Check the bug tracker for your bug: https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/
*quite* a new thing for me, a bit strange too. i will try to find whether the BUG is posted or not by using some keywords but since it is my first time i will ask you for help on whethr i should report my bug or not (before reporting to ALSA project)
Reinstalling the whole system because of a bug like this is a bad idea. The chance that it will actually help is a tiny something above zero.
a BIG thanks for telling this. i will not do this again. it seems i am still thinking in terms of Windows :-(
i thought it will be useful, take a look at this: sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [V8237 ]: VIA8237 - VIA 8237 VIA 8237 with AD1888 at 0xb400, irq 5 sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.14rc1 (Tue Jan 09 09:56:17 2007 UTC). sh-3.2$ cat /proc/asound/oss/sndstat Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v1.0.14rc1 emulation code) Kernel: Linux crux 2.6.20.3 #2 PREEMPT Mon Apr 30 17:15:00 UTC 2007 i686 Config options: 0 Installed drivers: Type 10: ALSA emulation Card config: VIA 8237 with AD1888 at 0xb400, irq 5 Audio devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Midi devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG Timers: 7: system timer Mixers: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG sh-3.2$ -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/
