icons missing and currupted after prt-get sysup

Hi, it is xfce4 running. after prt-get sysup the desktop icons are either missing or corrupted. I have tried what follows but all has been useless this time: 1)I have cleared my saved sessions cache (Settings Manager -> Session and Startup -> Session tab -> Clear saved sessions). I have logged out and back in again 2)I have cleared sessions cache by deleting ~/.cache/sessions Then again in xfce4 session, I tried to re-select icons by: Settings Manager > Appearance> Icons. It has been no use. I have had the same problem before and I solved the question by both ways that do are not solving the issue this time. No problem with the screen resolution: 1680x1050. I am running nvidia. I have also reinstalled/updated it and it was also useless. Tks

did you run all post-install scripts? $ sudo sh /usr/ports/opt/librsvg/post-install $ sudo sh /usr/ports/xfce/elementary-xfce-icon-theme/post-install after that select again icons with: $ xfce4-appearance-settings some examples with flat wm theme + elementary-xfce-dark icon theme: https://crux.nu/~sepen/tmp/xfce412flat.png https://crux.nu/~sepen/tmp/xfce412menuflat.png Best regards, -- Jose V Beneyto | http://sepen.mooo.com

Thank you Jose for your answer. I confess I did not run the post-install scripts as you remarked. although I have solved the issue by installing the tango-icon-theme from nwe repository and adding gtk-icon-theme-name = tango line in .gtkrc your important tip has been registered and will be used too. Best regards Cezar

Jose in attention to your post this is the output of the post-install script : bash-4.3# sh /usr/ports/xfce/elementary-xfce-icon-theme/post-install gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file. gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file. bash-4.3# I can still use the tango-icon but when I use the xfce4-appearance-settings to select the elementary-xfce-dark its content seems to be missing. tried to find a repository did not find

yep, that worked for me

There is no need to have tango-icon-theme installed. I think you missed something. Did you install xfce4 with depinst command? $ sudo prt-get depinst xfce4 Check dependencies for xfce4 port and verify that you have installed it: $ prt-get depends xfce4 | grep elementary-xfce [i] elementary-xfce-icon-theme Regards, -- Jose V Beneyto | http://sepen.mooo.com

Hi Jose. in attentio to your post: yes, I installed xfce4 with depinst command this the output of the dependencies checking: bash-4.3# prt-get depinst -if elementary-xfce-icon-theme package elementary-xfce-icon-theme is installed bash-4.3# then I checked the dependencies: bash-4.3# prt-get depends xfce4 | grep elementary-xfce [i] elementary-xfce-icon-theme then I tried to update and the end of the output is the following: ................................................................................................ WARNING: Footprint ignored. Building '/home/pkgmk/pkg/elementary-xfce-icon-theme#0.5-1.pkg.tar.xz' succeeded. prt-get: reinstalling elementary-xfce-icon-theme 0.5-1 gtk-update-icon-cache: Cache file created successfully. gtk-update-icon-cache: Cache file created successfully. gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file. gtk-update-icon-cache: No theme index file. -- Packages updated elementary-xfce-icon-theme [post: failed] prt-get: updated successfully bash-4.3# I remark that after the first xfce4 installation I had no problem with the icons. that happened after the first prt-get sysup regards!

Jose, gracias, the issue has been completely solved with the guidance you gave. I tried again and this time it worked. Now I have both tango-icon-theme and the elementary xfce as options in appearance>icons I can choose the option I prefer :) thks Best Regards Cezar

Inspired by this success story, I tried installing the full Xfce on my own box, after trying to run the Thunar file manager under Openbox and noticing some icons missing. Even with Xfce and its themes installed, Thunar only loads a complete set of icons when started under Xfce. Launching Thunar from within Openbox brings up only a partial set of icons, as illustrated in the URLs below. http://jquah.freeshell.org/images/thunar-on-openbox.png http://jquah.freeshell.org/images/thunar-on-xfce.png The script `startxfce4` appears to define the environment variable XDG_DATA_DIRS, but even after setting that manually and launching Thunar from within Openbox, I'm still not seeing all the available icons. It's really more of an aesthetic issue than a usability problem, but I'm curious if this behavior has been observed before. -- John

I have seen that on FreeBSD too with Openbox. I never did get to the bottom of that. I use Openbox on Crux but thus far have not bothered with a file manager. I do find the whole icon and themes thing confusing in general... James

Hi John, how do you set your gtk theme while running Openbox? I use both on my system as well (running Crux), and Openbox will look for the theme name specified in ~/.gtkrc-2.0. You can use the lxappearance program to set your gtk theme and it will write this file for you. I haven't had issues with incomplete icon sets. -- Jared H. "I have morals! +1 Anyway, I think this is not only related to CRUX. -- Jose V Beneyto | http://sepen.mooo.com

There is another situation.
Even with Xfce and its themes installed, Thunar only loads a complete set of icons when started under Xfce. Launching Thunar from within Openbox brings up only a partial set of icons, as illustrated in the URLs below.

Right now I can't check that at office, but I think what you mean is not only thunar, but any GTK application. Therefore GTK need to adjust icons for this. If so, you have several ways: - You can directly edit the file ~ / .gtkrc-2.0 for your user - Or if you use gtk-chtheme you can put it in your ~ / .gtkrc.mine I suggest you to view the README file in xfce4 port, where I added some info about to install_new_themes (https://wiki.xfce.org/howto/install_new_themes) $ prt-get readme xfce4 And if you just want an example: $ cat ~/.gtkrc.mine gtk-icon-theme-name = "elementary-xfce-dark" Anyway you can see https://urukrama.wordpress.com/openbox-guide/#Gtkthemes where is explained how to use the gtkrc-2.0 and gtkrc.mine files in Openbox. Gracias, Jose, the explanation on the Openbox guide helped me write a new ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file. Now all the icons are visible no matter which window manager I'm using. -- John
