Pet Peeve - Damaging Other people's work deliberately

Dear all, I have just had occasion to install the Statisitical Package "R", and was actually a bit disturbed to find that the License file had been removed. Together with some others of the files provided by the Package Authors to assist the user. Including of all things the names of the Authors. I do not believe that we have a duty to maintain this particular manifestation of the KISS principle. I regard it as vandalism on our part, and in the matter of the licence probably putting ourselves in breach of it. Whereas there may be a good reason to minimise the documentation provided with some utiities ( even though I disagree with that), when it comes to serious work type projects I think that policy should be given a serious rethink for every package, and in general, for the whole distro, It is crippling it. AND it is a lot of extra work to have to fix each Pkgfile to get the product in the form its authors intended. I have said this before, and will probably say it again. perl module packages

Hi guys. I've got some perl conundrums I'd like to discuss with you. I'm trying to get the Swedish xmltv grabber to work. However I'm not familiar at all with perl and I've noticed some strange things. I just updated perl to 5.8.7 which causes all p5-pkgs to break as they want to install thiere files under /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.6/ and perl or make or whatever causes them to be in 5.8.7 instead. Should version numbers be in the installation paths like this? Can/should it be changed to /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl or something instead? Isn't enough to separate the main perl releases like perl5 vs. perl6? Is the changes in the minor perl releases large enough so one should update/rebuild all p5- packages? Also, during my attempts to get xmltv working I've run into a seemingly endless string of new perl modules I have to create ports for in order to get the thing to install. Is it the right approach to create a new port for each perl module needed, or should I do one xmltv_se port which builds all perl modules needed? Regards, Martin

GCC 4.1 for 2.2?

FWIW, I have succesfully rebuilt (almost) all of my packages with GCC 4.1. They're from the 2.2 branch, revision 861. All were up-to-date before building, and the toolchain were first rebuilt two times, just to be sure. M crux-2.2/ports/core/gcc/Pkgfile M crux-2.2/ports/core/gcc/.md5sum Obviously :-) - I just bumped it, but maybe Objective-C++ support could be added as well. With my imagination probably being the primary factor, my KDE desktop and pkgmk (well, gcc) feels a little speedier now. And given the popularity Han's ProPolice-enabled gcc apparently used to have, it seems 4.1 would be loved by the paranoid people concerned about theoratical security issues, too! (That ought to put me back on his ignore list :-)) Of course 4.0 is safer given its life time - this is just to report my experience with 4.1 so far, which is much better than I expected to.

There are many new things in this release: beginning from the sourcecode that had been rewritten to have a better usage of memory and an "unified error and warning message system", all error and warning messages are managed by two function. The more tangible, for the user, new features are: - the "not found policy", when a dependence isn't found ilenia can act in three ways asking you if she can procede (setting this variable as "Ask", the default), stopping the build and install process (setting this variable as "Stop") or contnuing with next package (setting the value "Nevermind"); - the introduction of "/etc/favoritepkgmk", to use a non default pkgmk.conf for certain packages; - the "sysupng", during a system update (`ilenia -U`), the packages won't be updated merely in alphabetic order but with dependencies check; for example if gtk and pango are out of date, ilenia updates pango before of gtk. -- ... la scienza è la più recente, la più aggressiva e la più dogmatica istituzione religiosa Paul K Feyerabend - Contro il metodo

Hello, Can I find any info how hotplug/udev is working in crux? I'm a bit confused. I would like to start my a) Zaurus b) SD card For b) I checked with Ubuntu and it worked out of box. I try to copy some their conf., but i failed. pkgadd segfaults

Hello list, I run into a segfault whenever I run pkgadd (pkgutils 5.20). Am I the only one in the list with this problem? Now that Per retired from the Crux project, who is going to support this programs? This is the main server in the company I work for, and the hardware is running fine (I don't believe this is a hardware problem).
