Good news everybody, the KDE packages were updated for the 3.5.7 version. As I know you all appreciate a vanilla release, this is the list of patchs you'll find in the packages: - arts was patched to lower the powerusage [1] - kdegames was patched to remove bashisms, so mksh users can rejoice [2] - kdeutils was patched to enable klaptopdaemon [3] Still pending: - kdeaccessibility (requires festival for the TTS) - kdevelop update (the new version doesn't build out of the box) - update dependency list for xorg 7.0 As always, any comments are welcome. I think you'd need a way to separate 'libraries' (packages that merely exist to add functionality to other packages) from 'binaries' (packages which contain actual applications the user runs). Of course, for example, the sqlite library also contains a binary tool for manipulating sqlite databases. So, you'd basically have to add metadata to Pkgfiles in the comment section, in which case you'd run the risk of being burnt by a ports update breaking your system. Or, you could add metadata to the package database, which would really start turning the package manager into something more like rpm or dpkg. I've really been frustrated by this problem for years, and the only solutions I've come up with are: 1. Stop caring that you may have some extra packages you don't need lying around (this is actually the best approach unless you are crammed for space). If you run prt-get depinst gnome-terminal, don't expect to get your system back to the pristine state it started in when you first installed crux. 2. Be very careful about installing software. Understand what exactly goes on when you do a prt-get depinst, and keep track of the dependencies on your own. 3. Every now and then, list all your installed ports and find any ports you don't need any more. Nathan

creating a CRUX package

i want to create a CRUX package and i get information here: http://crux.nu/Main/Handbook2-3#ntoc24 i have 2 problems: 1.) my software is available only in CVS and Handbook does not describe CVS method. 2.) Pkgfile does not do any dependency-handling then how prt-get get handles that ? i am asking because the package i want to create has 3 dependencies. any way so that prt-get will automatically fetch the dependencies. or this is not CRUX specific :-( -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/

package database backtracking tool

There's been some talk on the ML about a tool I wrote a while ago that allowed you to take snapshots and manipulate the package database. The code had managed to completely disappeared so in my free time over the last few days, I have been rewriting it. The basic functionality is there, I just need to add the finishing touches. I thought I'd give the list a general run down on what it does, and open the floor for suggestions. The tool basically consists of several operations it can do, at this point in time there are 9 things it will do. Copy: This has 2 modes, it will either make a copy of the working package database, or make a copy of an existing stored database. Rename: This renames a given stored database. List: This has 2 modes. It will either list the stored databases, or list the packages in a stored database. Add: This adds a package from the working database to a stored database. Remove: This has 2 modes. It will either remove a package from a stored database, or remove a stored database. Merge: This will merge several stored databases into a single database. Unique: This finds packages that are unique among a list of stored databases. Common: This finds packages that are common among a list of stored databases. Diff: This is similar to the Unique operation, but instead finds packages that are unique to one database against a list of other databases. I should have things wound up by the end of the week. a simple CRUX prt-get question

now i am sure this is CRUX specific. i am very much hungry on getting an answer to this question as it is revolving in my brain since beginning. prt-get is a front-end to pkgutils, the CRUX ports-system, and it handles dependencies automatically while installing packages. i want to know why it does not handle dependencies while remove that specific package which is quite opposite to apt-get. i know we have "pkgfoster" available but why that "removal dependency-handling" was not built into prt-get when we have built "installation using dependencies". may be because of KISS approach but myself, being a newbie failed to see a connection. may you explain please ? -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/

Updated xorg-xf86-video-i810 port problem

Just a word of caution for those of you upgrading this port: Version 2.0.0 of the Intel driver, among other things, fixes a problem with video bios screen resolutions, but,in my case on a laptop, makes full screen 3D crash the machine. I have to revert back to the i810 driver that Crux 2.3 shipped with to get things working again. In addition, upgrading this port gives you two video drivers: the "i810" driver you'd expect and a new driver called "intel". They are in fact the exact same driver and both cause loss of full screen 3D (at least for me). They still include a "i810" driver so people don't have to update their xorg.conf. I don't know how the new driver behaves on a desktop machine with a CRT attached; I hope better! Chris

from last 2 days i am trying to download "x11-fonts-corefonts" from "opt" ports but download hangs/freezez at this place: connecting to kyz.uklinux.net | 80.84.64.291 |:80... i can download everything else but not these corefonts. any problem with download-site ? -- http://arnuld.blogspot.com/
